SSTU Students Take Part in the All-Russian Conference in St Petersburg
The 21st All-Russian Conference and Competition for Undergraduate and Postgraduate Student Projects, ‘Current Issues in Subsurface Resource Utilisation’, took place from 6 to 10 April at the Empress Catherine II St Petersburg Mining University.
The participants in this prestigious scientific event included students from the Yuri Gagarin State Technical University of Saratov.
The conference brought together young researchers from various regions of Russia and abroad, providing a platform for the exchange of scientific ideas, discussion of contemporary challenges in the field of subsoil use and the presentation of innovative projects.
Participants presented their research in the fields of geology, mining, and the rational use of resources.
A team of students from the Department of Ecology and Technosphere Safety of the URBAS Institute won the competition for collective environmental projects presented at the poster session of the conference-competition. The project focused on the Department of Ecology and Technosphere Safety’s research into technologies for the removal of petroleum products from water and soil.
Individual projects in the ‘Environmental Engineering’ section were presented by:
Polina Semenova (Russian Federation), a fourth-year student on the ‘Ecology and Natural Resource Management’ programme – ‘Feasibility study on preventing secondary salinisation of fields during land reclamation’;
Nikolay Prokazov (Republic of Kazakhstan), 2nd-year postgraduate student of the Department of Ecology and Technosphere Safety – ‘Treatment of wastewater containing oil and petroleum products using hydrophobic bentonite’;
Amer Adam Mohamed Mahmoud Elbaz (Arab Republic of Egypt), second-year Master’s student in the ‘Ecology and Natural Resource Management’ programme – ‘Technology for the biological remediation of oil-contaminated land and oil sludge at a specialised biocomposting site’;
Aida Azhigalieva (Republic of Kazakhstan), second-year Master’s student in the ‘Ecology and Natural Resource Management’ programme – ‘Effective technology for the disposal of drilling mud at an oil and gas condensate field in the Republic of Kazakhstan’.
The students’ individual projects and the group project were prepared under the supervision of Professor Elena Tikhomirova, Head of the Department of Ecology and Technosphere Safety. She also acted as a guest expert during the conference-competition.
